Home First Aid – Be Prepared

September 23rd, 2011

Home First AidAccidents & injuries can happen anywhere.  Where were you the last time you were hurt?  Did you have the necessary first aid supplies to treat your injury?  We believe that your environment will determine what types of supplies you should have available.   The typical family can expect to receive bumps, bruises, sprains and minor burns as part of their potential “injury”.

Here are some suggestions for items you should keep ready at your home:

Bandages (used to treat minor scrapes)
Gauze Pads (to protect, keep clean and absorb any blood)
Pressure Bandage or feminine napkin (to apply pressure to an open wound and stop bleeding)
First Aid Tape (to hold gauze pads or pressure bandages in place)
Antiseptic Wipes
(to clean a wound area)
Ace Type Bandage
(to wrap, support and protect a dressing & wound or to simply support a strained muscle.
Instant Cold Pack (to help reduce swelling and inflammation of an injured area.  A reusable gel (ice/heat) pack or ice in a zip lock bag will work well too
Antibiotic Ointment (to apply to a cut or scrape to help reduce risk of infection)
Protective Gloves (to be used to prevent exposure to germs, and infectious diseases)
Pain Relievers (fever reducers or for general pain, headache etc..)
Cold, Sinus & Flu (Over the Counter Medicines for cold & flu symptoms)

If you don’t want to put something together yourself, most basic first aid kits will have these items included and have you “on the ready” for the next injury.  For examples of the individual items listed, simply click on the links to see pictures and descriptions.  Some examples of complete ready to use kits are listed here.

Remember, accidents are not planned.  They can happen when you least expect it!  If you have suggestions for other first aid items to keep in your home, share them with us using the comment link below this article.

Don’t Upset the Bride! Custom Travel Kits

First Aid Kits Johnson & Johnson Cut & Scrape Kit

First Aid Cut and Scrape Kit from Johnson & Johnson

Everyone knows not to mess with a bride in the months before her wedding.  Recently, a few brides over at the Best Destination Wedding Forums found that our small Cut & Scrape Kits work well as OOT (Out of Town) Travel Kits for their guests.  These personal sized kits come packaged in a white plastic box with no markings, making them prime candidates for personalization.

One bride added her “logo and some sayings” to the outside of the box and “shout wipes, Excedrin, and Immodium” inside the box.  She called this a “Recovery, Oops, and Ouchie Kit”.  Adding your own stamp or logo is easy and produces a great, professional looking result.

These kits are easy to personalize and inexpensive.  Adding your own stamp or logo is as simple as placing a sticker.  They work great for corporate events, group camping trips, trade shows, or for carrying in a purse or backpack.  One time I even put together a batch for a car club that I’m a member of.  As always, if you need to have the contents of the kit customized let us know!

We sell these Cut & Scrape First Aid Kits for just over a dollar each.

Top 10 Halloween Safety Tips

Top 10 Halloween Safety Tips | FirstAidMonster

Have a Safe and Spooky Halloween

Kids love Halloween and so does  FirstAidMonster.  Memories of loaded pillow cases, full size candy bars, and mega sugar rushes surround the infamous October 31st holiday.  Back then, we didn’t have to worry.  Now, trick or treating can be unnerving to allow our children to wander in the dark around the neighborhood either with their friends or parents.  So what can a responsible parent do to help children be prepared for Halloween and have fond memories?

Check out our Top 10 Halloween Safety Tip List below for more some helpful suggestions:

Our Top 10 Halloween Safety Tips:

  1. Teach your children to stop only at houses or apartment buildings that are well-lit and never enter a stranger’s home.
  2. Pin a slip of paper with the child’s name, address, and phone number inside a pocket in case the youngster gets separated from the group (no child should ever be trick-or-treating alone).
  3. When in doubt, throw it out!  Inspect your child’s candy before they eat it.  It’s safest to eat only candy that is individually wrapped and not homemade.  If there is anything suspicious about a Halloween treat, don’t risk it.
  4. A word on masks:  The eye holes in masks should be large enough for your child’s peripheral vision.  Also, check to make sure that no part of your child’s custom restricts breathing.
  5. Take the time to make sure there are no tripping hazards on on your porch, steps, and walkway.  Check for flower pots, bikes, sticks / branches, garden hoses, or anything that may prove hazardous to young children rushing from one house to the next.
  6. Motorists: Watch for children in dark clothing that may be running between parked cars or walking on the roadways, medians, and curbs.  Be sure to carefully look for pedestrians when entering or existing driveways.
  7. Make sure that you and your child are visible.  Wear bright colored clothes, to counteract dark clothes try adding reflective strips to to your child’s costume or candy bag.  Carry a flashlight or glow stick so you can see where you are walking.
  8. Use the internet to check for registered sex offenders in the area.  Make sure your trick-or-treat route excludes any flagged houses.
  9. Serve your kids a filling meal before they go trick-or-treating.  This way they won’t have the urge to chow down on candy before you can inspect it.  It will also cut down on sugar induced tummy aches.
  10. Make sure that if your child is carrying a prop or accessory to their costume that it is soft and flexible enough no injuries will occur if they trip or fall on it.

From all of us at FirstAidMonster, have a safe & happy Halloween!

Splinter Outs: Integral for a School Nurses’ Firstaid Kit

September 10th, 2010
Splinter Out Splinter Removers | FirstAidMonster

Splinter Out Splinter Removers

One sector that we continually sell to is the public and private school market.  At the heart of all good school first aid programs is a good school nurse.  MyHealthySchool.com has posted an article on the basics of being a school nurse.  In addition to encouraging good hygiene, sneeze etiquette, and healthy sleep habits the article mentions some products that school nurses should always keep on hand.  The author of the post then linked to our Splinter Our Kits.  We couldn’t agree more!

Splinter Out Kits consist of a pocket sized plastic case that contains 20 sterile splinter picks.  They have a specially beveled point that is perfect for splinter removal.

I remember when I was kid, I would get splinters from our wooden deck in the backyard, and my dad would get out the pack of splinter outs.  I wasn’t scared because I knew the Splinter Out  simply scratches the surface of the skin and breaks loose the layers of skin to access and remove the splinter.  I does not hurt!   Splinters are an injury that can be painful and irritating but once it’s properly removed the wound can quickly heal (unless of course we are talking about a splinter the size of a 2×4!).

We have Splinter Out Kits in stock, selling at our usual low competitive prices available here.
